My Role
UX designer designing an app for YumChef from conception to delivery.
Responsibilities
- Conducting interviews
- Paper and digital wireframing
- Low and high-fidelity prototyping
- Conducting usability studies
- Accounting for accessibility
- Iterating on designs.
User Research
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I was designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working professionals and young adults who do not have time to prepare healthy meals.
The app confirmed assumptions about YumChef’s customers, but research also revealed that customers wanted the opportunity to find chefs that suit their budgets and the opportunity to review the chefs and add them to their favourites. Other user problems that were discovered included balancing different interests and obligations alongside meal preparation, as well as experiencing decision fatigue in the process.
Ideation
Taking time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the features that made it to the digital wireframes would result in a quick and smooth user journey.

Storyboard during the ideation phase
Digital Wireframes and Low-Fidelity Prototype
My main objective was to incorporate features that help users with visual impairments. I went for a minimalistic design. I made sure buttons were large and that there was adequate use of negative space.

Usability Study Findings
1. Category Discovery: Users expressed the need for clearly defined and easily accessible food categories to streamline their browsing experience.
2. Navigation Expectations: Participants highlighted the importance of a persistent navigation menu and a visible back button to enhance ease of movement within the app.
3. Order Flexibility: Users want the ability to order multiple types of meals simultaneously, rather than being limited to one category or chef per order.

To improve the user experience, I made several changes to the food categories section of the app. First, I added buttons for each category to make it easier for users to identify their preferred type of meal.
In addition, I expanded the categories to make room for a wider variety of food options. This update allows users to find exactly what they're looking for and discover new and exciting meal options they may not have considered before.

As part of my redesign of the checkout process, I made a few key changes to improve the overall user experience. First, I removed the days' option from the initial stages and moved it to the last step of the checkout process. This change ensures that users have all the necessary information before selecting their preferred delivery date.
Additionally, I added a new favourites feature to the app, allowing users to save their favourite chefs and meals for quick and easy access in the future. Together, these changes create a more streamlined and enjoyable experience for YumChef customers.

Accessibility Considerations
Applied high-contrast colour schemes to improve legibility, in line with WCAG guidelines.
What I Learnt
During the design process, I realized that there is often a disconnect between what a user needs and what the designer thinks they need. This insight was gained through a learning process that influenced the final design and iterations, ultimately leading to a more user-centred approach.
Impact
Impact
The app makes users feel like they have someone they can rely on when they are busy. They love the feeling that healthy food is easily accessible to them.
“It would make life easier when you're tired. As long as it's not expensive. This is for days when you don't want takeout but want a home-cooked meal.” - Quote from user feedback.
